Google and DHL Partner to Advance Global Sustainable Shipping Solutions

DHL and Google, a leading technology company, have announced a new collaboration aimed at advancing sustainable shipping practices. This partnership will leverage DHL Express’s GoGreen Plus service, which utilizes Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), to enhance the environmental performance of shipping operations.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel Initiative

The initiative involves the express shipping of Google devices across the Americas, Asia, and Europe. It aligns with Google’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions across its operations and value chain by 2030. Omar Molina, Director of Global Transportation at Google, emphasized the importance of optimizing transportation methods to meet this goal, stating, “Optimizing how we transport Google devices around the world is a key part of this journey. That’s why we’re thrilled to collaborate with partners like DHL, who share our passion for Net-Zero.”

DHL’s Commitment to Low-Emission Transportation

John Pearson, CEO of DHL Express, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, noting, “By deploying SAF across our international network, we are pleased to offer the GoGreen Plus service to our long-standing partner Google. We are confident that this agreement and Google’s meaningful investment will encourage others to take the same initiative and drive the transition to low-emission transportation services using sustainable aviation fuel.”

Origin and Expansion of the Partnership

The collaboration between Google and DHL Express was first discussed during the DHL Era of Sustainable Logistics Global Summit in April 2023. Following the summit, Google initiated a pilot project with DHL Express in June 2023, which successfully demonstrated the benefits of SAF. This success led to the expansion of the partnership and the adoption of the GoGreen Plus service for future operations.

Details of GoGreen Plus Service

Launched in 2023, the GoGreen Plus service is designed to help customers reduce CO2e emissions associated with their shipments. The service is supported by major contracts with BP, Neste, and World Energy. SAF, used in the GoGreen Plus service, is produced from renewable feedstocks such as used cooking oil, waste, and hydrogen, unlike conventional aviation fuels derived from crude oil.

DHL’s Environmental Goals

The GoGreen Plus service supports DHL Group’s broader goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. With approximately 70 percent of DHL’s carbon footprint coming from its air network, sustainable air transport solutions are crucial for creating a more environmentally friendly logistics operation.
