Airtel and ATC Collaborate to Deliver Internet Connectivity to Schools Throughout Kenya.

Airtel has joined forces with ATC Kenya in a strategic partnership aimed at providing internet connectivity to 50 primary schools across Kenya. The initiative, announced on Tuesday, will commence with a pilot program involving 10 schools. The comprehensive plan includes installing, upgrading, and refurbishing ICT labs and classrooms within these schools. Additionally, it involves the provision of monthly data bundles, television sets, laptops, and other digital devices to facilitate internet access.

Airtel Kenya Managing Director, Mr. Ashish Malhotra, emphasized that this project is part of a broader Airtel initiative focused on expediting access to digital learning in primary schools, particularly targeting rural areas and hard-to-reach communities. The objective is to address challenges hindering learning opportunities and ensure that every child has access to quality education, preparing them for a promising future. Mr. Malhotra also mentioned Airtel’s commitment to expanding its network across Kenya to provide fast and reliable internet to these schools.

As part of the pilot program, teachers will undergo training on utilizing technology for teaching purposes. ICT clubs will be established with volunteer support, and necessary hardware will be provided. These activities aim to create a digital platform for learners, enhancing their learning experience and access to information.

ATC Kenya CEO, Mr. George Odenyo, highlighted that the project aligns with American Tower’s vision of building a more connected world. He emphasized the significance of leveraging ATC Kenya’s Digital Communities Program to enhance ICT access and foster partnerships within the communities they operate in. The program seeks to establish connected spaces, utilizing technology for digital equity, literacy, and career upskilling, ultimately improving the lives of community members.

In 2021, Airtel Africa partnered with UNICEF to connect over 1 million learners in 14 African countries to online learning resources by 2027. Simultaneously, American Tower, through its Digital Communities program, has established over 500 Digital Communities, serving more than 600,000 people across 16 countries over the past decade.
