Over Half of Children in the META Region Exposed to Violent Content Online

In today’s fast-paced digital world, parents are facing a growing challenge: how to protect their children from the dangers lurking online. With endless hours spent on gadgets and access to vast amounts of content, ensuring that kids are safe from harmful or inappropriate material has never been more critical.

Kaspersky’s latest survey sheds light on the alarming reality many parents in the Middle East, Turkey, and Africa (META) face. A staggering 79% of parents in this region are trying to take full control of their children’s online experiences, with 15% activating monitoring tools only when necessary. However, 6% of parents admit to staying disengaged from their children’s digital lives altogether.

These figures highlight a major concern: the risks children face online are more prevalent than ever. According to Kaspersky’s findings, more than half of children (54%) in the META region have encountered violent content on the internet. Even more disturbing, 18% of parents reported incidents where strangers tried to befriend their children online, potentially putting them at risk. What’s worse, 25% of parents have fallen victim to financial losses due to their children’s online actions, including accidental purchases and online scams.

With these dangers mounting, it’s no wonder that parents are looking for ways to safeguard their children’s digital lives. To help tackle this, Kaspersky experts suggest a combination of technical and non-technical solutions. Increasing digital literacy for both parents and children is crucial in navigating the complexities of the internet. Understanding the potential risks and how to avoid them empowers families to make smarter, safer decisions online.

On the technical side, Kaspersky emphasizes the importance of parental control programs. These tools offer parents a powerful way to monitor screen time, track locations, and block inappropriate content, including on platforms like YouTube. Seifallah Jedidi, Head of Consumer Channel at Kaspersky for the META region, believes that content protection is at the heart of keeping children safe. He says, “Our mission is to give parents the confidence that their children are protected. We’re proud to be consistently recognized for our efforts in ensuring online safety.”

But it’s not just about installing software—it’s about fostering open, honest communication between parents and children. Discussing the risks, setting clear rules, and establishing boundaries can go a long way in protecting kids from the dangers of the online world.

To help parents take the first step, Kaspersky has launched the Kaspersky Cybersecurity Alphabet—a must-have guide for introducing children to the world of digital safety. This book breaks down important cybersecurity concepts in a fun, engaging way, from spotting phishing websites to understanding VPNs and encryption. And the best part? It’s available as a free downloadable PDF, making it accessible to every family that wants to build a solid foundation of digital safety.

In addition to education, Kaspersky urges parents to install trusted security solutions to ensure children are protected from malicious downloads or cyber threats while gaming or browsing. One of these solutions is Kaspersky’s Safe Kids app, which provides comprehensive protection against a wide range of online dangers, making it an essential tool for every parent in today’s digital age.

With the right combination of awareness, open dialogue, and cutting-edge technology, parents can confidently navigate the complexities of the internet, creating a safer digital space for their children to explore, learn, and grow. The time to act is now—let’s protect our kids and build a safer online future together.
