Uber Celebrates One Year of Growth for Electric Boda in Kenya

One year after launching its first electric mobility product in Africa, Uber is celebrating notable success with its Electric Boda in Nairobi. The introduction of electric bikes aligns with Uber’s global objective to become a zero-emissions platform by 2040. Since its debut in August 2023, Electric Boda has achieved substantial growth, including an 81% increase in active driver sign-ups. This growth is attributed to the product’s ability to reduce total ownership costs by 30%-35%, primarily through savings on fuel.

Enhanced Service and Safety Measures

The affordability and efficiency of Electric Boda have led to a 94% increase in trips since its launch. The service is now accessible in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD), an area previously challenging for two-wheeler mobility products. To further ensure road safety, passengers using Uber Electric Boda will receive dedicated helmets provided by Greenwheels Africa. Additionally, drivers will undergo alco-blow tests at the beginning and end of their shifts.

Supporting Green Mobility and Local Employment

Uber’s successful launch of Electric Boda highlights Kenya’s role as a hub for innovation. Imran Manji, Uber’s Head of East Africa, emphasized that the introduction of Electric Boda not only offers drivers a new source of income but also supports Kenya’s transition to eco-friendly transportation. This initiative is in line with the National Electric Mobility Policy, which aims to foster a greener transportation system.

Greenwheels’ Contribution to Green Mobility

Nabil Anjarwalla, CEO of Greenwheels, expressed pride in the partnership with Uber and the progress made in promoting green mobility. Over the past year, Electric Boda has transported over 700,000 passengers and covered more than 12 million kilometers. Greenwheels remains committed to reducing carbon emissions, providing stable employment for drivers, and enhancing the convenience and safety of urban transportation for Nairobi residents.
