KenGen to Boost Kenya’s Green Energy Initiative with Addition of 42MW Solar Power

Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) is set to enhance Kenya’s green energy capacity by adding a 42.5MW solar power plant in the Seven Forks area. This project marks a significant step in scaling up Kenya’s renewable energy efforts.

Project Details

The solar power plant, planned to be installed at KenGen’s Seven Forks dams site—a hub for hydroelectric power generation—will take approximately 28 months to complete. This new facility aims to bolster Kenya’s renewable energy sources and support the national grid by providing additional solar power during the day.

Benefits and Impact

The introduction of this solar energy capacity will help mitigate the rising costs of power by complementing hydroelectricity production. It will also contribute to water conservation for nighttime electricity generation, particularly during periods of drought.

Partnership and Support

This initiative is being carried out in collaboration with the French Development Agency (AFD), marking a first for KenGen in its renewable energy ventures. The project underscores the commitment to advancing green energy solutions amid global climate challenges.

The signing ceremony for the project was attended by key figures including Principal Secretary of the State Department for Energy, Alex Wachira, KenGen Managing Director and CEO, Eng. Peter Njenga, French Ambassador to Kenya HE Arnaud Suquet, and AFD Country Director Bertrand Willocquet.

Statements from Leaders

French Ambassador Arnaud Suquet highlighted France’s enthusiasm for supporting Kenya’s renewable energy transition, noting Kenya’s success with projects like the Olkaria Geothermal Field and Seven Forks.

Principal Secretary Wachira praised the project, emphasizing its potential to provide affordable and reliable clean energy, generate employment, and enhance community engagement through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

KenGen’s CEO, Eng. Peter Njenga, described the partnership as timely and crucial for Kenya’s goal of achieving 100% renewable energy by 2030. He emphasized that the new solar project will play a vital role in conserving water for hydroelectric power generation, especially during dry seasons.

This collaboration highlights a significant advance in Kenya’s energy infrastructure and represents a step forward in the country’s journey towards a sustainable and green energy future.
