Samsung and Vodafone Successfully Conduct Inaugural Open RAN Call Featuring AMD Processors

Samsung Electronics and Vodafone, in collaboration with AMD, have achieved a significant milestone by successfully demonstrating an end-to-end call utilizing the latest AMD processors to enable Open RAN technology. This groundbreaking achievement is the first of its kind in the industry, showcasing the technical prowess of the companies in enhancing the Open RAN ecosystem.

The demonstration, conducted in Samsung’s R&D lab in Korea, utilized Samsung’s versatile, O-RAN-compliant, virtualized RAN (vRAN) software powered by AMD EPYC™ 8004 Series processors on Supermicro’s Telco/Edge servers. The setup was further supported by Wind River Studio Container-as-a-Service (CaaS) platform. The primary goal of the demonstration was to verify optimized performance, energy efficiency, and interoperability among the solutions provided by the partners.

This joint effort emphasizes Samsung and Vodafone’s commitment to strengthening their position in the Open RAN market and expanding their ecosystem with industry-leading partners. The growing Open RAN ecosystem plays a crucial role in helping operators build and modernize mobile networks with increased flexibility, faster time-to-market (TTM), and unparalleled performance.

The companies will showcase the results of their test, exceeding 1Gbps throughput for multi UE on a multi-cell configuration, at MWC 2024. Samsung and Vodafone’s collaboration in the Open RAN space began in June 2021, with Samsung becoming a strategic partner for Vodafone to realize its Open RAN vision and modernize legacy networks. The partnership has since evolved, with the companies recently initiating the largest Open RAN rollout in the U.K. in August 2023.

Samsung’s robust ecosystem reflects its leadership in providing vRAN and Open RAN solutions that deliver reliable and sustainable performance surpassing telco-grade standards. The company’s extensive expertise in commercial networks for Tier 1 operators across North America, Europe, and Asia positions it as a frontrunner in the industry.

Through continuous research and development, Samsung remains at the forefront of 5G networks, offering end-to-end solutions that include chipsets, radios, core infrastructure, private network solutions, and AI-powered automation tools. The company’s commitment to advancing connectivity is evident in its market-leading product portfolio and its provision of network solutions to mobile operators serving millions of users worldwide.
