MCK Seeks Public Feedback on AI, Data, and Social Media Guidelines for Journalism

The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has taken a significant step toward shaping the ethical use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), data, and social media in journalism. The Council is inviting Kenyans, industry stakeholders, and interested parties to provide feedback on draft guidelines aimed at ensuring responsible and professional integration of these technologies in Kenya’s media landscape.

Ethical Integration of AI in Journalism

In a statement, MCK emphasized the importance of public participation in policy-making, aligning with the requirements of the Kenyan Constitution. Through a dedicated technical committee, the Council has developed four comprehensive documents to guide media practitioners in navigating the challenges and opportunities brought by emerging technologies. These documents include:

  1. Data Governance Guide for Media Practice in Kenya
  2. Media Handbook for Reporting on AI in Kenya
  3. Media Guide on the Use of AI in Kenya
  4. Guide on the Use of Social Media and the Internet for Media Practice in Kenya

MCK CEO David Omwoyo explained that the initiative is part of the Council’s proactive approach to ensuring that technological advancements in journalism are met with professionalism, ethical standards, and public trust.

Why These Guidelines Matter

As AI and data-driven tools revolutionize media operations and social media continues to influence journalism, the potential for misuse and ethical breaches grows. Omwoyo highlighted that the proposed guidelines aim to:

  • Maintain journalistic integrity and uphold public trust.
  • Provide a framework for ethical AI integration in media practices.
  • Help media practitioners leverage new technologies while safeguarding professionalism.

“This is about supporting the media in adapting to technological changes without compromising ethical standards,” said Omwoyo.

Public Participation: How to Get Involved

The Council is encouraging members of the public to review and submit their feedback on these draft guidelines. Written submissions can be sent via email to Guidelines@mediacouncil.or.ke by January 26, 2025.

The draft documents are available on the official Media Council of Kenya website. Public input will play a crucial role in refining these guidelines to reflect diverse perspectives and the evolving needs of the industry.

A Step Toward Future-Proof Journalism

Omwoyo reaffirmed MCK’s commitment to empowering journalists and media professionals to uphold the highest standards while embracing technological innovation. “These guidelines represent a proactive approach to addressing the dynamic challenges and opportunities presented by AI, data, and social media in journalism,” he said.

By establishing these standards, MCK seeks to create a balanced framework where technology enhances, rather than undermines, journalistic practices.

Conclusion: Shaping Ethical Journalism in the Digital Age

The Media Council of Kenya’s initiative marks a critical moment for journalism in the country. With public participation, the proposed guidelines have the potential to position Kenya as a leader in ethical AI adoption and digital innovation within the media industry.
