Kenya Pipeline and Syokinet Unveil 1.6 Tbps Capacity on New Fiber Line

The Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) has joined forces with Syokinet Solutions, an Internet Service Provider (ISP), to launch a new high-capacity fiber optic cable with a data throughput of 1.6 Terabits Per Second (Tbps). This fiber line stretches from Mombasa to Nairobi and aims to significantly enhance internet speeds and reliability in Kenya’s two largest cities.

Significance of the New Fiber Link

The new fiber link is a major leap forward in Kenya’s digital infrastructure, marking a crucial step towards achieving national connectivity goals. The upgraded fiber infrastructure will offer gigabit internet speeds to homes, businesses, and community networks, greatly improving digital access across Nairobi and Mombasa.

Statements from Key Figures

During the launch event held at KPC’s Nairobi headquarters, Managing Director Joe Sang highlighted the importance of this partnership in supporting Kenya’s digital transformation. He emphasized that the collaboration with Syokinet aligns with KPC’s long-term strategy for infrastructure expansion and diversification. “The strategic partnership with Syokinet will unlock additional connectivity and provide high-speed internet services for homes and businesses between Nairobi and Mombasa,” Sang said. He also expressed confidence in the durability and security of the new fiber optic infrastructure.

Enhanced Connectivity and Future Plans

Sang noted that the new fiber line will not only support faster internet for households but also expand public WiFi services through hotspots and community network growth. The increased capacity will benefit enterprise data centers and local ISPs, enhancing bandwidth availability and resilience. KPC plans to continue expanding its fiber network and engage with more local ISPs to maximize the utility of this infrastructure.

Syokinet’s Role and Impact

Syokinet CEO Ian Kasyoki praised the new fiber optic cable, describing it as a significant advancement in providing robust and scalable digital services. Kasyoki highlighted the positive impact of the partnership on customer connectivity and quality of life. “We are committed to working with partners like KPC to support the government’s vision of a digitally-enabled society,” Kasyoki said.

Alignment with Government Initiatives

The launch of this fiber line supports the government’s ambitious Digital Superhighway Project, which aims to bolster Kenya’s digital infrastructure. The project includes plans to lay 100,000 kilometers (62,000 miles) of fiber optic cable, establish 25,000 public Wi-Fi hotspots, and create 1,450 digital hubs across the country.

Industry Impact

Over the years, KPC has collaborated with major telecom operators and ISPs, including Safaricom, MTN, Airtel Network, Jamii Telecom, and Wananchi, to expand its fiber optic network. This latest development is expected to further enhance the digital landscape in Kenya, supporting broader connectivity and digital growth.
