Africa’s Largest 5G Smart Mining Network Launched by MTN, Huawei, and China Telecom

In a groundbreaking collaboration, MTN, China Telecom, and Huawei have deployed Africa’s largest 5G private network in the Northern Cape for one of the continent’s leading manganese mining companies. This milestone follows a memorandum of understanding signed at AfricaCom last year, aiming to bring advanced digital ICT solutions to African industries.

Transforming Mining Operations with 5G

The deployment of this state-of-the-art 5G network is set to revolutionize mining operations. By providing ultra-reliable, high-speed connectivity, the network supports innovative applications such as personnel surveillance, vehicle tracking, and unmanned trucks. These advancements enhance productivity, improve workplace safety, and optimize operations, setting a benchmark for smart mining across Africa.

Beyond operational efficiencies, the 5G-enabled network aligns with global sustainability goals by promoting greener mining practices. It optimizes energy consumption and resource management, positioning the mine as a leader in sustainable mining.

Advancing the 5GtoB Ecosystem

This initiative showcases the potential of 5G-to-Business (5GtoB) solutions to drive industrial transformation. The collaboration highlights the complementary strengths of the three partners:

  • Huawei provided a comprehensive 5G private network tailored to mining-specific demands.
  • MTN brought its robust infrastructure and expertise in network integration.
  • China Telecom leveraged its global experience in vertical industries, offering advanced system integration and digital solutions.

Reed Zhang, Managing Director of China Telecom South Africa, remarked, “This project reflects our leadership in next-generation ICT solutions, empowering Africa’s largest 5G-enabled smart mine and driving the intelligent transformation of the mining industry.”

Partnerships Driving Digital Transformation

Sudipto Moitra, General Manager of MTN ICT Converged Solutions, emphasized the significance of partnerships in unlocking technological possibilities: “5G is more than faster connectivity; it’s a catalyst for transforming industries. Together with Huawei and China Telecom, we are enabling industries to innovate and contribute to Africa’s economic growth.”

MTN’s strategic partnership with Huawei is fueling the expansion of 5G private networks across multiple sectors, including mining, oil and gas, ports, manufacturing, and education. MTN is also extending its 5G footprint to countries like Nigeria, Zambia, Côte d’Ivoire, and Cameroon, driving digital transformation across the continent.

A Step Forward for Africa’s Digital Revolution

Alex Xing, Vice President of Huawei’s MTN Key Account Department, highlighted the broader implications: “This project is a significant milestone for the mining sector and Africa’s digital transformation. By leveraging advanced 5G technology, we aim to promote operational excellence, empower businesses, and advance sustainable development.”

The launch of Africa’s largest 5G private network underscores the transformative power of collaboration and cutting-edge technology in driving smarter, safer, and more sustainable industrial practices. As digital transformation accelerates across industries, this initiative sets the stage for Africa’s leadership in next-generation smart solutions.
