In 2024, Google plans to discontinue Gmail’s basic HTML view while keeping Gmail itself unaffected

Gmail users can breathe a sigh of relief, as Google reassures that Gmail itself is not going anywhere. However, a specific way of accessing it is set to be phased out. The basic HTML view, which allows users to view their emails in a simplified format, is scheduled to be discontinued by Google in January 2024.

Users who have not actively chosen the “basic HTML” view need not worry, as most have likely been using the default “new” Gmail view for quite some time. For those accustomed to the basic HTML version, the change may not have a significant impact, as Gmail will automatically switch to the Standard view after the specified deadline.

Google’s decision to sunset the basic HTML view is outlined in an email sent to users, explaining that this older version lacks the full functionality of the modern Gmail interface, which replaced it over a decade ago. The HTML version is designed for “slower connections and legacy browsers,” making it a more stripped-down option. Despite its simplicity, it lacks features such as chat, spell checker, search filters, keyboard shortcuts, and rich formatting.

Attempting to access the HTML version currently prompts a message from Google, indicating that it is intended for specific situations, such as slower connections, and asks for confirmation to continue with the standard version. While the HTML version may be less feature-rich, it serves a purpose in scenarios where users prefer a no-frills experience or face low-connectivity situations. It remains unclear whether Google has plans to introduce a mode specifically tailored for low connectivity in the future.

Google’s overarching strategy involves integrating AI-powered features into its products, including Gmail. Recent developments include the introduction of the Duet AI feature to assist users in composing emails and the integration of the Bard chatbot, allowing users to inquire about their email history. As the company focuses on advancing its products with artificial intelligence, the retirement of the basic HTML view aligns with its commitment to providing users with more advanced and feature-rich experiences.
