Google has officially opened applications for the 2025 Google for Startups Accelerator Africa, a prestigious three-month program designed to empower early-stage African startups harnessing the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to solve critical local and continental challenges.
Now in its seventh edition, the Accelerator targets Seed to Series A startups across Africa that are building AI-first solutions with a clear commitment to responsible innovation. To be eligible, startups must have a live product, at least one founder of African descent, and a vision for scalable, ethical AI development.
What Selected Startups Will Receive
Participants in the 2025 cohort will gain access to a wealth of resources, including:
- Dedicated technical mentorship from Google engineers and industry veterans
- Up to $350,000 in Google Cloud credits
- Exclusive networking opportunities with global investors, partners, and ecosystem leaders
- Specialized workshops on technology, AI strategy, product development, and leadership
Why Google Is Doubling Down on AI in Africa
Google believes in the transformative potential of AI to accelerate Africa’s socio-economic development. According to McKinsey, AI could contribute as much as $1.3 trillion to Africa’s economy by 2030, provided there’s grassroots support for innovation.
“Startups are Africa’s problem solvers. With the right resources, they can scale their impact far beyond local communities,” said Folarin Aiyegbusi, Google’s Head of Startup Ecosystem, Africa. “This program reflects our belief that AI can be transformative when shaped by those who understand the context deeply.”
A Proven Track Record of Impact
Since its inception in 2018, the Accelerator has supported 140 startups across 17 African countries, collectively raising over $300 million in funding and creating more than 3,000 jobs. Many alumni are now recognized as regional and global leaders in their sectors.
For instance, Crop2Cash, a Nigerian agritech startup and program alum, leverages AI to onboard smallholder farmers, build digital financial identities, and provide access to credit, traceable payments, and productivity tools. Their innovation has improved agricultural outcomes and unlocked financial opportunities for underserved farmers.
