25 Kenyan Students Successfully Conclude Digital Technology Immersion Program in China

Twenty-five Kenyan students recently completed a transformative one-week immersion into digital technology skills under the Huawei Seeds for Future program in Shanghai, China. This initiative coincided with the MWC Shanghai 2024 and welcomed participants from various Sub-Saharan African countries, aiming to empower them with essential digital skills for innovation and career readiness.

Focus on Tech4Good Initiative

During their ICT study tour, the students engaged in the Tech4Good project, focusing on harnessing technology to tackle pressing social and environmental challenges. The program included visits to prominent tech facilities such as Huawei Watt Exhibition Hall, the DJI R&D center in Shenzhen, and Huawei Songshan Lake, providing hands-on learning experiences.

Recognition at LEAP Summit 2024

Sylvia Jebet from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology achieved remarkable success at the 2024 Leadership Employability Advancement Possibility (LEAP) Summit, securing the second position among participants from over 50 Sub-Saharan African countries. Her accolade was for outstanding performance in Digital Content creation, showcasing various sites visited during the tour.

Huawei’s Commitment to Talent Development

At the Shanghai MWC 2024, Huawei announced its ambitious plan to train an additional 150,000 individuals in Sub-Saharan Africa over the next three years. This initiative builds upon Huawei’s earlier goal to equip over 100,000 people in the region with crucial digital skills by 2025, a milestone already surpassed ahead of schedule.

Impact and Partnerships in Sub-Saharan Africa

Huawei has significantly contributed to talent development in Sub-Saharan Africa, having trained over 18,000 individuals across countries like Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Namibia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Nigeria, and Ghana. The company’s efforts are supported by collaborations with government agencies, academia, and industry partners, facilitating comprehensive skill-building initiatives under the LEAP framework.

Future Prospects and Training Initiatives

Under LEAP, Huawei continues to advance its digital power and cloud ecosystem through partner training, teacher incubations, and job fairs. These efforts underscore Huawei’s commitment to sustainable development and ICT capacity building across Africa, preparing the workforce for digital transformation and innovation in the coming years.
