Originally launched as Sokowatch in 2016, Wasoko is a platform that offers free same-day delivery and financing of essential goods to informal retail stores throughout Africa. Through SMS or a mobile app, retailers can place orders anytime and have them delivered to their store using Wasoko’s proprietary logistics network.
Having already delivered over 2.5 million orders to more than 50,000 informal retailers across Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda, Ivory Coast, and Senegal, Wasoko secured a Series B funding round of US$125 million in March of last year to support further expansion. Now, the company has announced its entry into Zambia, marking its first venture into Southern Africa. Wasoko plans to invest over US$1 million in its inaugural year of operations in Zambia to benefit local businesses and communities, offering essential goods at affordable prices through e-commerce.
The launch of its central hub in Lusaka will enable small retailers throughout the city to access a wide range of products for same-day delivery and working capital financing via a mobile app. Establishing Lusaka as a central hub is part of Wasoko’s strategic shift to a hub and spoke logistics network, enhancing operational efficiency and bolstering its capacity for rapid regional expansions.
Daniel Yu, the founder and global CEO of Wasoko, expressed enthusiasm for the company’s expansion into Zambia, highlighting the favorable business environment, high smartphone usage, and the government’s commitment to growing the digital economy. He believes that this move will not only accelerate Wasoko’s progress across the continent but also empower Zambian citizens by increasing their purchasing power and improving their livelihoods.
Additionally, in addition to its expansion into Zambia, Wasoko plans to double its service radius in its existing markets of Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Uganda. With a network of over 200,000 informal retailers and a track record of delivering over 5 million orders to date, Wasoko continues to strengthen its presence and impact in these regions.
